What we can do together
From discovery lessons to help you begin your journey as a brass musician, to side-by-side coaching in your local band section (subject to approval from director), to advanced recital/audition prep, chamber ensemble coaching - all the way to music theory, history, appreciation and brass consultation sessions to improve your own pedagogy and teaching abilities. Not sure which brass instrument you want to play? Allow me to bring the 4 beginner brass instruments (trumpet, trombone, euphonium, French horn) and we will try them all and figure out which one you want to embark on!

Flexible, bespoke tuition in the art of brass playing and musicianship, from the Juilliard School to your living room. I can help you get to the next level, untangle technical problems you may be dealing with, show you how to play any repertoire you wish, and help you relax into the technique so you can enjoy playing again.

Do you play in your local wind/concert band but are having difficulty getting notes out? Difficulty following the conductor? Confidence issues? Subject to director approval, I will come and sit next to you for the duration of a rehearsal, and I will discreetly give you advice and play along with your part so you can develop the confidence to contribute to your band’s sound as a whole.

For advanced students in higher education looking for a second pair of ears to play audition repertoire, excerpts, or to develop pedagogies of your own as you prepare to enter the industry. Or for fellow educators who have run into a roadblock and need a second opinion on how to proceed - I have delivered masterclasses on many occasions and have some out-of-the-box approaches to technical challenges. Let’s collaborate.

If music theory has evaded you your entire life, if you hear modulation and zone out, if you see a score and your vision blurs, then it’s time to fix that. Once you understand that the vast majority of people have an understanding of Western music theory which is upside-down, the door will be opened to mastering it.
Music history is equally important to understanding the whole picture and to really appreciate what is being said to us today by artists of all kinds. Together we can travel up the timeline through Western music history, listening to everything from Gregorian chants to Daft Punk, and you can see the roots which branched off into the tree we have today.

Do you have a performance coming up? A concert you are planning to attend, but want to know more about what to listen for? What to talk about with the musicians at the reception? How to critique the performance? Where’s that critical turning point in the movement? Together we can study the piece and get you up-to-speed before the event.
